Irisul scăzut crește până la 35 (40) cm înălțime și se caracterizează prin înflorire timpurie din aprilie până în mai. Există diferite soiuri în grădini, care diferă prin culoarea florii (de la alb, galben, roz până la violet) și venatură. Lăstarii de inflorescență, care poartă 1-2 flori, trebuie tăiați la bază după înflorire pentru a evita formarea semințelor care slăbesc planta. Plantele înfloresc cel mai bine atunci când sunt crescute în poziții însorite, în sol uscat până la moderat umed, bine drenat, fertil, destul de sărac în humus, dar bogat în minerale. Când solul este constant umed și impermeabil, sau plantele sunt plantate la umbră, acestea sunt rapid atacate de boli bacteriene și fungice. Plantele se caracterizează prin frunze erecte, în formă de sabie, rigide, de culoare gri-verde. Irisul scăzut poate fi plantat în paturi de flori, într-o grădină de stânci sau în containere.
